CADENCE ~ Program Notes
Two Toccatas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Harald Mommsen
(Published by HoneyRock) ~ Recorded in recital at Wheaton College, Illinois
Both Chenoweth and Mommsen were students in the Chicago Loop when
his teacher Alexander Tcherepnin introduced them and suggested 'Hal'
compose something for marimba. It was Tcherepnin¹s 'interpoint' theory
which inspired Toccata #1. Interpoint combines melodic lines in such a way
as to avoid coincidental attacks. The rhythmic grouping of 3 in one hand is
interlaced with groupings of 4 or 5 in the other hand. Toccata #2 is for four
mallets. This work was inspired by Bulgarian rhythms employed by Bartók.
Etude, op. 6 no. 8 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Clair O. Musser
(Published by Studio 4 Music) ~ Recorded in practice session
This short etude was scribbled on a single sheet of manuscript paper while
Musser was on a plane which was flying over the girls' school the Chenoweth
twins, Vida and Vera, were attending. He mailed it to Vida who first performed
it at William Woods College.
Concerto for Marimba, 3 movements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paul Creston
(Published by G. Schirmer) ~ Recorded in practice session
For all the years that Vida Chenoweth and Dean Sanders performed together,
it is astonishing that no recordings were made. They practiced for the concert
at hand and were unconcerned with posterity. This one-of-a-kind example
was recently discovered on vinyl disc made from a taped practice session
at The Three Arts Club, Vida¹s residence on Chicago¹s near north side in
the early 1950s. Their taping was made possible by having borrowed a 60 lb.
Webcor reel-to-reel recorder, so heavy that the two carried it through the
streets of Chicago by suspending it on a broom handle.
This rehearsal of
Paul Creston¹s Concertino for Marimba, never intended for public use, is
included here for student interest and for auld lange syne. To Vida and Dean,
a tape recorder was just a tool for self improvement.

Bach made various instrumental settings of the prelude. This one is reassigned
to the marimba directly from his version for solo violin, unedited.
